Behind the smile – what’s really lurking in your toothpaste?

Coffee? Check. Breakfast? Check. Harmful toothpaste chemicals? Um….

We don’t think about it but every day we start with nasty chemicals going into our mouths. You might be wondering why toothpaste companies get away with adding these chemicals. The reason is that larger companies have convinced associations such as the Food and Drug Administration that the use of these chemicals outweighs the risk on our health. But we know that’s not the case!

While we're often conscious of what we’re munching and crunching, the humble dollop of toothpaste is commonly overlooked as something we absorb and digest. Our mouth however is one of the most absorbent organs in the body, so even though you spit the toothpaste out, harmful chemicals found in many toothpastes have time to enter the bloodstream. It’s also why many medications can now be taken by dissolving under your tongue.

Whoa, chemical overload!

When thinking about the amount of times we brush our teeth, we can begin to imagine the number of times our body has absorbed and digested chemicals. This, over time, can have a negative effect on our body, such as permanent tooth discoloration, stomach ailments or even acute toxicity. So, here’s our top six chemicals to avoid:

1. Triclo… What?

If we knew that this chemical had the potential to disrupt our endocrine system, thyroids, reproductive hormones, irritate our skin, and cause antibiotic resistance, we would throw that toothpaste away fast! While it’s been banned in the use of soaps by the USA Food and Drug Administration, unfortunately Triclosan is still legal in toothpaste, despite research finding it may promote breast cancer progression. Sadly, big name brands have snuck the chemical into formulas claiming the positive connection that it 'fights plaque and gingivitis’, but that comes with hefty side effects.

2. Ain’t nobody got time for SLS

We’re conditioned to think that foaming equals a better clean, but unfortunately it’s not the case. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) in products can irritate our mouth and is linked to cancer sores. If you rounded up most of your personal care and household cleaning products, you would find most of them contain SLS – so it might be time for an overhaul.

3. Who ordered a headache?

Your body doesn’t come with a protective biological mechanism to break down harmful ingredients such as aspartame and other artificial sweeteners, so it makes no sense to use them in products. Side effects of using such chemicals may include headaches, ear buzzing, dizziness and nausea.

4. DEA-gusting!

Chemicals are not our body’s friend and this includes DEA. DEA has been known to disrupt hormones and has the potential to harmfully react with other ingredients that can be easily absorbed into our skin, linking to cancer in the stomach, oesophagus, liver, and bladder.

5. Petrol anyone?

Propylene Glycol is a mineral oil (i.e. a petrochemical) and is commonly used in industrial products such as antifreeze, paints and enamels, and can cause skin, eye, and lung irritation – need we say more!

6. Beads are for wearing only

Not only bad for the environment (that’s a whole other article), but microbeads can get trapped under the gums and cause gum disease.

Empower yourself and make the switch!

The great news is that there are many better, safe and beneficial toothpaste ingredients you can use instead of unnecessary, harmful ingredients, such as:

Eucalyptus Leaf Oil: Prevents gum diseases.

Peppermint Oil: Fights bacteria and promotes mouth freshness!

Anise: Helps maintain oral health and fights bad breath.

Organic chamomile: Treats gum and anti inflammation.

Licorice: Prevention and treatment of caries.

So, we’re on a mission to offer a new kind of toothpaste without compromising on performance or the environment! Make the switch to NOICE and join the revolution!
